OVERVIEW

What the PMI-SP® is — and why it reads as a scheduler's credential

The PMI Scheduling Professional is PMI's specialist credential for the person who owns the schedule. It is not a general project management qualification with a scheduling chapter. The whole examination is about building a schedule model, baselining it, statusing it and defending it — which is why it reads as evidence of a trade rather than of a broad awareness.

The weighting makes the emphasis plain. Schedule Planning and Development carries 31% of the paper and Schedule Monitoring and Controlling carries 35%, so two-thirds of the exam is building the schedule and then controlling it. Schedule Strategy and Stakeholder Communications Management take 14% each, and Schedule Closeout 6%.

PMI-SP also asks for documented scheduling experience, and all of it must have been accrued within the last five consecutive years. This programme delivers 30 contact hours of formal project scheduling education, teaches all five domains, and keeps coaching you through the preparation weeks that follow.

Who it's for

Who should take PMI-SP certification training

It is written for people who already own or audit a schedule and want the specialist credential that says so.

PMI-SP REQUIREMENTS

PMI-SP eligibility — three sets, and the scheduling education hours

One of three sets, each pairing a level of education with months of project scheduling experience and contact hours of scheduling education.

Highest educationProject experienceProject management education
Secondary degree40 months of project scheduling experience within the last 5 consecutive years40 contact hours of project scheduling education — this programme delivers 30 of them
Four-year degree24 months of project scheduling experience within the last 5 consecutive years30 contact hours of project scheduling education — delivered by this programme
GAC-accredited degree12 months of project scheduling experience, with a bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a GAC-accredited programme30 contact hours of project scheduling education — delivered by this programme

Read the experience rule carefully: all project scheduling experience must have been accrued within the last five consecutive years before you submit. The education requirement has no such window — PMI's instruction is to record all education in the specialty area of project scheduling regardless of when it was accrued, so a certificate of completion stays valid for a later application.

Eligibility is assessed by PMI, not by ProCert. Not sure which set you qualify under, or how many contact hours you already hold? Send us your background on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly.

WHERE PMI-SP CANDIDATES GET CAUGHT

Most people who fail the PMI-SP could build a schedule. The exam asked why it was built that way.

  1. 01

Revising general project management when 66% of the paper is developing and then controlling a schedule model.

  2. 02

Knowing one scheduling tool well, and meeting questions about method, policy and analysis rather than which button to press.

  3. 03

Treating Schedule Strategy and Stakeholder Communications as filler, when at 14% each they carry 28% of the paper between them.

  4. 04

Leaving the application until last, then finding that the scheduling experience falls outside the five-year window.

Questions

PMI-SP certification in Malaysia — common questions

Is PMI-SP worth it in Malaysia?

It is the credential to hold if the schedule is your responsibility rather than one of many. PMI-SP tests scheduling exclusively and requires documented scheduling experience, so it says something specific that a broad project management certificate does not.

What are the prerequisites for PMI-SP?

One of three sets. With a secondary degree: 40 months of project scheduling experience and 40 contact hours of scheduling education. With a four-year degree: 24 months and 30 contact hours. With a bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a GAC-accredited programme: 12 months and 30 contact hours. All the experience must fall within the last five consecutive years.

How many questions is the PMI-SP exam?

170 multiple-choice questions in 210 minutes, which is three and a half hours. Of those, 150 are scored and 20 are pretest questions dispersed through the domains that do not count towards your result.

How is the PMI-SP exam weighted?

Five domains: Schedule Strategy 14%, Schedule Planning and Development 31%, Schedule Monitoring and Controlling 35%, Schedule Closeout 6%, and Stakeholder Communications Management 14%. Planning and Controlling together are 66% of the paper.

Does my Microsoft Project or Primavera training count?

Towards the education requirement, yes — PMI accepts hours spent training in Microsoft Project and other scheduling tools as project scheduling education. Send us what you have already completed and we will tell you how many contact hours remain.

Do the contact hours expire?

No. PMI's instruction is to record all education in the specialty area of project scheduling regardless of when it was accrued, so your certificate of completion stays valid for a later application. The experience requirement is the one with a window — that must fall within the last five consecutive years.

PMI-SP or PMP — which should I take?

PMP covers project management broadly. PMI-SP covers scheduling only, in depth, and its whole exam is the schedule model and its control. If you are the planner or scheduler on a contract judged on milestone dates, PMI-SP is the closer fit. Many people hold both.

How much does PMI-SP cost in Malaysia in total?

Face-to-face training is RM 6,800 early-bird or RM 7,300 standard, nett with no additional SST. Live virtual training is available upon enquiry. Self-paced is USD 199 / USD 249 / USD 299 for 90 / 180 / 365 days' access. The PMI examination fee is USD 416 for members and USD 670 for non-members. An examination and PMI membership bundle is RM 3,300 and includes one year of PMI membership.

How do I keep the certification once I have it?

30 PDUs every three years, earned and reported through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements system. Miss the cycle and the certification is suspended on the third anniversary of the day you passed, until you renew.

What happens if I fail?

Your application approval opens a one-year eligibility period, and you may sit the exam up to three times within it. PMI charges a reexamination fee for the second and third attempts. If you fail three times, you must wait a year from your last attempt before reapplying for PMI-SP.

Can I sit the PMI-SP exam online from Malaysia?

Yes. PMI offers online proctored testing alongside Pearson VUE test centres. Online requires a private room, a stable connection and a clear desk. The exam is administered in English only.

Is the exam voucher included?

The exam voucher is an optional add-on. You still need PMI to approve your application before you can schedule.

Can you run this in-house for our team?

Yes. Private cohorts run at your premises or ours, with scheduling built around your team. Minimum 15 participants.
