PMP applicants in Malaysia follow PMI's global eligibility rules. The required project experience is 60, 48, 36 or 24 months, depending on the recognised education pathway. Experience must be within the previous 10 years and overlapping periods count once. You also need 35 hours of eligible Project Professional training, or an accepted alternative such as an active CAPM certification.

Use the eligibility self-check below before paying for an examination or choosing a preparation course.

The four current PMP eligibility pathways

The following summarises the education and experience pathways in PMI's July 2026 Examination Content Outline. Qualification names alone do not establish equivalence.

Completed education pathway

Qualifying project experience

Training component

Upper-secondary qualification or its recognised equivalent

60 months within the previous 10 years

35 eligible training hours or an accepted alternative

Recognised short-cycle tertiary qualification, such as an eligible associate-level, higher-certificate or technical/vocational qualification

48 months within the previous 10 years

Same training requirement

Bachelor's degree or higher, or a qualification formally recognised at the applicable bachelor's-equivalent level

36 months within the previous 10 years

Same training requirement

Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a PMI GAC-accredited programme

24 months within the previous 10 years

Applicable training requirement; relevant GAC coursework may count

What does this mean for a Malaysian diploma holder?

Do not select a pathway solely because a certificate contains the word "diploma", "advanced" or "professional". Check the qualification's recognised level, awarding institution and supporting records. PMI's outline provides a framework for mapping national qualifications; it does not automatically place every Malaysian qualification with the same title in one pathway. A degree from a university that has a GAC programme is also not automatically a GAC-accredited degree: the completed programme itself matters.

A useful enquiry to the awarding institution is: "What is the formally recognised level of my completed qualification, and what document confirms that level?" Keep that evidence with your education records. An unresolved education classification is a reason to obtain clarification, not to choose whichever experience requirement is lowest.

What experience counts?

PMI looks for professional experience leading and managing projects. Relevant responsibilities can include planning work, coordinating people and stakeholders, managing risk or change, making delivery decisions and taking responsibility for outcomes. The job title does not have to be Project Manager. Conversely, having that title is not enough if the underlying work does not meet the criteria. See the Examination Content Outline for the full criteria.

A project engineer who coordinates a defined commissioning project may have relevant experience. An engineer who performs routine maintenance without managing a project may not. Unpaid work can potentially qualify when it is professional project work; personal events, home improvements and academic degree projects are not substitutes for qualifying professional experience.

The practical test is to describe a temporary initiative, its objective and dates, and what you personally led. Do not turn every task into a separate project. For help documenting the work, use the project-experience writing guide.

How to count overlapping projects

Count distinct qualifying calendar time, not the sum of every project's duration. PMI explicitly prohibits double-counting overlapping experience.

Consider this fictional example, using complete months for illustration:

Project record

Dates

Months on that project

Facility commissioning

January–June 2025

6

Reporting-system rollout

March–August 2025

6

Combined qualifying period

January–August 2025

8, not 12

Both projects may be relevant to your application, but the shared March–June period does not become eight months because you worked on two initiatives. Keep the actual dates and let your records show the overlap. Exclude gaps and periods outside the 10-year window, and use PMI's application instructions for the final calculation.

What counts towards the 35 training hours?

Eligible education must concern project management and meet PMI's documentation requirements. Employer programmes, training companies, eligible academic courses and appropriate distance learning can qualify under the current rules. For self-paced study, PMI's outline requires an end-of-course assessment. Reading a book or answering practice questions independently is not, by itself, a substitute for eligible training hours. For a mixed-subject course, only the relevant learning time counts.

Keep the course title, provider, completion date, qualifying hours and certificate or completion record. Ask a provider what its certificate will actually state before enrolling.

An active CAPM certification is an accepted alternative to documenting the 35 hours. It does not waive the education or project-experience requirement.

The late-2026 training change: announced versus effective

PMI currently requires 35 hours of Project Professional training. PMI lists qualifying routes that include its own PMP exam-preparation course, PMI Authorized Training Partners, PMI GAC programmes, an active CAPM certification and eligible third-party training.

PMI's updated live-training eligibility requirements take effect on 1 December 2026. From that date, live instructor-led PMP training, whether delivered in person or virtually, will be eligible only when provided by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, China Registered Education Provider or eligible accredited higher education programme. Training completed before 1 December 2026 remains eligible under the requirements in effect before that date.

If you plan to complete PMP training close to 1 December 2026, check the provider status, delivery format and PMI training-eligibility requirements that apply on your course completion date.

Eligibility self-check

This is a preparation checklist, not an automated approval or a PMI decision.

Check

Your decision

My completed qualification maps to a documented PMI pathway

Yes / No / Need clarification

I meet that pathway's minimum experience after removing overlaps

Yes / No / Need calculation

All experience counted falls within the relevant 10-year window

Yes / No

My responsibilities involved genuine professional project leadership

Yes / No / Need review

I have eligible training evidence or an active CAPM

Yes / No

My education and experience records can support the application

Yes / No

If all answers are yes, you may be ready to prepare an application. This is not a promise of acceptance. If experience is short, build the missing experience rather than modifying dates. If only training is incomplete, compare an eligible training route. If the qualification or responsibilities are unclear, seek clarification before applying.

Three candidate scenarios

Bachelor's degree with four years of relevant work. The experience duration may exceed the 36-month threshold, but only after checking professional responsibility, recency and overlaps. Confirm training next.

Diploma with three years of work. First establish the qualification's recognised pathway. Do not assume the word diploma establishes either the 48-month or 60-month route. Three years of activity also does not establish three years of qualifying leadership.

Technical lead without a Project Manager title. Review actual decisions and delivery responsibilities. Explain the work truthfully; do not change the title or invent authority to fit an application.

These are illustrative decision scenarios, not individual eligibility determinations.

Frequently asked questions

Are Malaysia's PMP requirements different?

No separate Malaysia experience standard is used in PMI's PMP certification guidance. National qualifications still need to be mapped appropriately to PMI's global pathways.

Can training replace missing project experience?

No. Training and experience are separate requirements. Completing a course does not turn an otherwise ineligible applicant into an eligible one.

Does holding CAPM make PMP automatic?

No. An active CAPM can satisfy the training-documentation route, but you still need to meet the relevant education and experience criteria and pass the PMP assessment. Check the Examination Content Outline for the full criteria.

What should I do after checking eligibility?
