OVERVIEW

What the PMI-PMOCP™ is — and why eligibility is one set, not three degree tiers

The PMI Project Management Office Certified Professional is PMI's credential for people who work in a project management office. It is competency-based: the exam is written from a job task analysis of what PMO practitioners actually do, and the application asks for documented time in a project-related profession as well as formal education related to PMO.

PMI's January 2025 Examination Content Outline sets six domains: Organizational Development and Alignment at 16%, PMO Strategic Elements at 18%, PMO Design and Structuring at 18%, PMO Operation and Performance at 15%, PMO Enhancement and Effectiveness at 18% and People at 15%. Three domains sit at 18% each, so strategy, design and enhancement carry as much weight as each other — and more than operations. PMI also spreads customising approaches across the value-delivery spectrum through all six domains rather than isolating them in one, so you will meet them everywhere.

Eligibility is one set, not three degree tiers. You need a secondary diploma, 10 hours of formal education related to PMO, and either 36 months in a project-related profession within the last eight years or a PMP in good standing. This programme delivers those 10 contact hours, teaches all six domains, and keeps coaching you through the preparation weeks that follow.

It is written for people who already work in or into a project management office and want the credential that matches that work.

PMI-PMOCP REQUIREMENTS

PMI-PMOCP eligibility — one set, a PMP alternative, and 10 hours of PMO education

Highest educationProject experienceProject management education
Secondary diploma36 months in a project-related profession within the last eight years — or a PMP in good standing10 hours of formal education related to PMO — delivered in full by this programme

This programme delivers the 10 hours. You receive a certificate of completion covering the education requirement, so on submission that line is already handled. PMI also offers its own on-demand PMI-PMOCP Exam Prep Course that satisfies the same 10 hours. If cost is your only constraint, that route is open to you and we would rather you knew. What this programme adds is live teaching across all six domains and a coach until you sit. Choose on that basis, not on the hours alone. The education has no time frame, so hours you earned years ago still count; if only a portion of a course dealt with PMOs, only those hours count.

Eligibility is assessed by PMI, not by ProCert. Not sure whether your months count, or whether your PMP already covers the experience line? Send us your background on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly.

WHERE PMI-PMOCP CANDIDATES GET CAUGHT

Most people who stall on PMI-PMOCP do it at the application, not the exam. The hours have to be about PMO, and the months have to be recent — unless you already hold a PMP.

  1. 01

Counting general project management training towards the 10 hours, when PMI asks for formal education related to PMO, and only the hours actually spent on PMOs if a course mixed topics.

  2. 02

Recording project work older than eight years, which the application will not accept — or not realising a PMP in good standing already covers the experience line.

  3. 03

Preparing the operational day-to-day of a PMO, then meeting a paper where strategy, design and enhancement each carry 18%.

  4. 04

Treating People as a soft extra when it is 15% of the exam — the same weight as PMO Operation and Performance.

Questions

PMI-PMOCP certification in Malaysia — common questions

Is PMI-PMOCP worth it in Malaysia?

It is the credential to hold if the project management office is your work rather than one chapter of a broader project role. Unlike a general project management qualification, PMI-PMOCP is written from a job task analysis of PMO practice and asks for documented time in a project-related profession plus formal education related to PMO. The six domains run from organisational project management through PMO strategy, design, operations, enhancement and people, so it evidences that breadth.

What are the prerequisites for PMI-PMOCP?

One set. A secondary diploma — a high school diploma, associate's degree or global equivalent — plus 10 hours of formal education related to PMO, and either at least 36 months spent in a project-related profession within the last eight years or a PMP in good standing.

I hold a PMP. Do I still need 36 months of experience?

No. A PMP in good standing satisfies the experience requirement. You still need the secondary diploma and the 10 hours of formal education related to PMO. Current PMP holders do not need to record project hours on the application.

Do general project management courses count towards the 10 hours?

Only the hours actually spent on project management offices. PMI asks for formal education related to PMO. If only a portion of a course dealt with PMOs, only those hours count. One hour of classroom instruction equals one contact hour. PMI chapter meetings do not count unless at least one hour was a learning activity, in which case those hours may be recorded. Self-directed learning — reading books, watching videos, or sessions with coaches or mentors — does not satisfy the requirement.

Does PMI's own course satisfy the 10 hours?

Yes. PMI offers its own on-demand PMI-PMOCP Exam Prep Course, and that course satisfies the 10 hours of formal education related to PMO. This programme also delivers those 10 hours, with live teaching across all six domains and coaching until you sit. If cost is your only constraint, PMI's own course is an honest alternative.

How many questions is the PMI-PMOCP exam?

120 multiple-choice and multiple-answer-select questions in two hours forty-five minutes (165 minutes). Of those, 100 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest questions placed randomly, so you cannot tell them apart. There is an optional 10-minute break after the first 60 questions; once you start that break you cannot return to earlier questions. A tutorial and a survey are optional, up to 15 minutes, and are not counted against the 165 minutes.

What happens if I fail?

You may sit the exam up to three times within your one-year eligibility period. If you do not pass in three attempts you must wait one year from the last attempt before reapplying for PMI-PMOCP, though you may apply for another PMI certification in the meantime. If the one-year eligibility period expires without a pass, you must reapply.

How do I keep the certification once I have it?

30 PDUs every three years. At least 20 must come from education; at most 10 may come from giving back. That 20/10 split is the PMOCP rule — it is not the 18/12 split used by some other PMI credentials.

Can I sit the PMI-PMOCP exam online from Malaysia?

Yes. PMI offers the exam in person at a Pearson VUE test centre and as an online proctored exam. Online requires system checks and an extensive check-in. The exam is offered in four languages; confirm the language available when you schedule.

How much does PMI-PMOCP cost in Malaysia in total?

Face-to-face training is RM 3,000 early-bird or RM 3,300 standard, nett with no additional SST. Live virtual training is available upon enquiry. Self-paced is not offered for this programme. The PMI examination fee is USD 380 for members and USD 524 for non-members. An examination and PMI membership bundle is RM 2,900 and includes one year of PMI membership.

Is the exam voucher included?

The exam voucher is an optional add-on. You still need PMI to approve your application before you can schedule.

Can you run this in-house for our team?

Yes. Private cohorts run at your premises or ours, with scheduling built around your team. Minimum 15 participants.
