OVERVIEW

What the PMI-PBA® is — and why the experience requirement matters more than the exam

The PMI Professional in Business Analysis is PMI's credential for people who do the requirements work on projects and programmes: understanding the business problem, eliciting and analysing requirements, tracing them through delivery, and evaluating whether what was built actually solved anything. It sits alongside the PMP rather than beneath it, and it is assessed on documented practitioner experience as well as on an exam.

The exam is 200 multiple-choice questions in 240 minutes, of which 175 are scored and 25 are unscored pretest questions dispersed through the paper. Questions are distributed across five domains: Needs Assessment at 18%, Planning at 22%, Analysis at 35%, Traceability and Monitoring at 15% and Evaluation at 10%. Analysis is by a wide margin the largest domain, so a third of the paper is elicitation, decomposition, specification and validation of requirements.

Be clear-eyed about the entry bar. PMI wants 60 months of business analysis practice if your highest qualification is a secondary degree, or 36 months with a bachelor's, all earned in the last eight years — plus 35 contact hours of education in business analysis practices. This is a practitioner credential, not an entry point. This programme delivers the 35 contact hours, teaches all five domains, and keeps coaching you through the preparation weeks that follow.

Who it's for

Who should take PMI-PBA certification training

It is written for people who already do business analysis work and can document years of it — PMI's experience requirement is the first hurdle, not the exam.

Eligibility is assessed by PMI, not by ProCert. Not sure whether your experience will count, or how to describe it? Send us your background on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly.

WHERE PMI-PBA CANDIDATES GET CAUGHT

Most people who stall on the PMI-PBA did not fail the exam. They could not evidence the experience, or they under-read Analysis.

  1. 01

Spreading revision evenly across five domains when Analysis alone is 35% of the paper.

  2. 02

Treating Traceability and Monitoring as paperwork, then meeting questions on impact, dependency and baseline change.

  3. 03

Leaving the experience write-up until submission, then finding the last eight years do not add up to 60 or 36 months.

  4. 04

Learning technique names, when the questions ask which technique you would reach for and why.

Questions

PMI-PBA certification in Malaysia — common questions

Is PMI-PBA worth it in Malaysia?

It is worth it if you already do requirements work and can document years of it, because that is the entry bar. PMI asks for 60 months of business analysis practice on a secondary degree or 36 months with a bachelor's, earned in the last eight years, so holding the credential says something a short course cannot.

What are the prerequisites for PMI-PBA?

One of three sets, each requiring 35 contact hours of education in business analysis practices: a secondary degree plus 60 months as a practitioner of business analysis; a bachelor's degree or higher plus 36 months; or a bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a GAC-accredited programme plus 24 months of unique, non-overlapping experience. All the experience must have been earned in the last eight years.

How many questions is the PMI-PBA exam?

200 multiple-choice questions in 240 minutes. Of those, 175 are scored and 25 are unscored pretest questions dispersed randomly through the paper. There are no scheduled breaks, and if you take one the clock keeps running.

How is the exam weighted across the domains?

Needs Assessment 18%, Planning 22%, Analysis 35%, Traceability and Monitoring 15%, Evaluation 10%. Analysis is the largest single domain by a wide margin, which is where most of your preparation should sit.

Do the 35 contact hours expire?

No. PMI's instruction is to record all training hours regardless of when they were accrued, provided the coursework is complete by the time you submit your application. One hour of classroom instruction equals one contact hour, and where only part of a course covered business analysis practices, only those hours count.

How does PMI-PBA differ from IIBA's CBAP?

We will not quote IIBA's requirements here, because they change and their handbook is the only place to read them. What we can tell you is what PMI-PBA requires: 35 contact hours of business analysis education, 60 or 36 months of documented practitioner experience depending on your degree, and a 200-question exam weighted towards Analysis. If you already hold a PMI credential such as the PMP, PMI-PBA also keeps your certifications and PDU reporting in one place.

How much does PMI-PBA cost in Malaysia in total?

Face-to-face training is RM 7,000 early-bird or RM 7,500 standard, nett with no additional SST. Live virtual training is available upon enquiry. Self-paced is USD 199 / USD 249 / USD 299 for 90 / 180 / 365 days' access. The PMI examination fee is USD 324 for members and USD 575 for non-members. An examination and PMI membership bundle is RM 2,700 and includes one year of PMI membership.

How do I keep the certification once I have it?

60 PDUs every three years, earned and reported through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements system. That is the same heavier cycle as the PMP. Miss it and the credential is suspended on the third anniversary of the day you passed, then expires at the end of the suspension year.

What happens if I fail?

You are granted a one-year eligibility period in which you may sit the exam up to three times. Re-examination fees apply to the second and third attempts. Fail three times inside that year and you must wait a year from your last attempt before reapplying for PMI-PBA, though you may apply for another PMI certification at any time.

Can I sit the PMI-PBA exam online from Malaysia?

Yes. PMI offers online proctored testing alongside Pearson VUE test centres. Online requires a private room, a stable connection and a clear desk.

What language is the exam in?

English only. PMI's handbook records that language aids for the PMI-PBA exam are not currently available, so plan on reading long scenario stems in English under time pressure.

Is the exam voucher included?

The exam voucher is an optional add-on. You still need PMI to approve your application before you can schedule.

Can you run this in-house for our team?

Yes. Private cohorts run at your premises or ours, with scheduling built around your team. Minimum 15 participants.
