What the PMI-RMP® is — and why the eligibility rules are stricter than they look
The PMI Risk Management Professional is PMI's specialist credential for people who own risk on a project rather than manage the project as a whole. It is competency-based, so it asks for documented experience in project risk management alongside formal education in that same specialty. That combination is what separates it from a general project management qualification.
PMI's Examination Content Outline sets five domains: Risk Strategy and Planning at 22%, Risk Identification at 23%, Risk Analysis at 23%, Risk Response at 13% and Monitor and Close Risks at 19%. Identification and Analysis together carry 46% of the paper, and Monitor and Close Risks outweighs Response — so the exam is far more interested in how you find, quantify and track risk than in the moment you choose a response strategy. PMI also spreads predictive, agile and hybrid approaches across all five domains rather than isolating them in one, so you will meet them everywhere.
The eligibility rules are specific in a way that catches people out. Both the experience and the education must be in project risk management, not general project management, and all experience has to fall within the last five consecutive years. This programme delivers 30 contact hours in that specialty area, teaches all five domains, and keeps coaching you through the preparation weeks that follow.

PMI-RMP eligibility — three sets, and why the hours change with your degree
Three sets, and which one applies depends on your highest qualification. Note that the education requirement drops from 40 hours to 30 once you hold a bachelor's degree.

Read the word specialty carefully. PMI wants contact hours within the specialty area of project risk, so a general project management course does not count, and where only part of a course covered risk you may record only those hours. There is no time frame on the education, so hours you earned years ago still count and this certificate of completion stays valid for a later application. The experience is the opposite: it must all fall within the last five consecutive years, and PMI asks you to total the months you spent on project risk management across every project.

PMI-RMP certification in Malaysia — common questions
Is PMI-RMP worth it in Malaysia?
It is the credential to hold if risk is your specialism rather than one line in your job description. Unlike a short risk workshop, PMI-RMP requires documented project risk management experience and contact hours in that specialty, so it evidences depth. It also covers predictive, agile and hybrid delivery across all five domains, so it travels between the project environments you are likely to work in.
What are the prerequisites for PMI-RMP?
One of three sets. With a secondary school diploma or global equivalent: 36 months of project risk management experience and 40 contact hours of project risk education. With a bachelor's degree or higher: 24 months and 30 contact hours. With a bachelor's degree or higher from a GAC-accredited programme: 12 months and 30 contact hours. All experience must have been accrued within the last five consecutive years.
Do I need 30 contact hours or 40?
It depends on your qualification, and this catches people out. A bachelor's degree or higher brings the requirement down to 30 contact hours. A secondary school diploma, associate degree or global equivalent means 40. This programme delivers 30, which satisfies the degree routes in full and covers 30 of the 40 hours the diploma route needs.
Do general project management courses count towards the hours?
No. PMI asks for contact hours within the specialty area of project risk. If only part of a course covered risk, you may record only the hours actually spent on risk. One hour of classroom instruction equals one contact hour, so a 30-hour programme records as 30.
How many questions is the PMI-RMP exam?
115 questions in two and a half hours. Of those, 100 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest questions placed randomly, so you cannot tell them apart. There is one optional 10-minute break after the first section of roughly 58 questions, and once you start that break you cannot return to earlier questions.
Does my risk experience expire?
The experience does. All project risk management experience must have been accrued within the last five consecutive years before you submit. The education does not: PMI puts no time frame on the contact hours, so training you completed years ago still counts and your certificate of completion stays valid for a later application.
How much does PMI-RMP cost in Malaysia in total?
Face-to-face training is RM 6,000 early-bird or RM 6,500 standard, nett with no additional SST. Live virtual training is available upon enquiry. Self-paced is USD 199 / USD 249 / USD 299 for 90 / 180 / 365 days' access. The PMI examination fee is USD 416 for members and USD 670 for non-members. An examination and PMI membership bundle is RM 3,300 and includes one year of PMI membership.
How do I keep the certification once I have it?
30 PDUs every three years. The cycle starts the day you pass the exam, and if you have not reported the PDUs by the third anniversary the credential is suspended for a year before it expires.
What happens if I fail?
You may sit the exam up to three times within your one-year eligibility period. PMI charges a re-examination fee for the second and third attempts. If you do not pass in three attempts you must wait a year from the last attempt before reapplying for PMI-RMP, though you may apply for another PMI certification in the meantime.
Can I sit the PMI-RMP exam online from Malaysia?
Yes. PMI offers online proctored testing alongside Pearson VUE test centres. Online requires a private room, a stable connection and a clear desk. Either way the exam is delivered in English only, with no language aids available.
Is the exam voucher included?
The exam voucher is an optional add-on. You still need PMI to approve your application before you can schedule.
