What the PMI-CPMAI™ is — managing AI work, without needing to have built a model
The PMI Certified Professional in Managing AI is PMI's credential for people who will run AI initiatives as projects — not for people who will train the models. PMI-CPMAI requires no prior project management, technical or AI experience. You must be at least 18, and you must complete the PMI-CPMAI Exam Prep Course before you can schedule the exam.
The exam is five domains. Identify Business Needs and Identify Data Needs are 26% each, so more than half the paper is establishing the problem and the data, not building the model. The prep course itself is organised around the six phases of the CPMAI methodology: Business Understanding, Data Understanding, Data Preparation, Model Development, Model Evaluation and Model Operationalization. The course is six phases; the exam is five domains. Both are true.

You must be at least 18, and you must complete the PMI-CPMAI Exam Prep Course. There is no experience requirement.

Completion of the exam prep course is a condition of scheduling, not optional revision. PMI sells its own 21-hour self-paced version of the same course. If cost is your only constraint, that route is open to you. What this programme adds is live teaching and a coach until you sit.

PMI-CPMAI certification in Malaysia — common questions
Is PMI-CPMAI worth it in Malaysia?
If you will be accountable for AI initiatives rather than for writing models, yes. It requires no prior AI experience, and it is one of the few PMI credentials that is open on that basis.
What are the prerequisites for PMI-CPMAI?
Be at least 18, and complete the PMI-CPMAI Exam Prep Course. PMI requires no prior project management, technical or AI experience or certifications.
Do I need a PMP or a technical background?
No. The 2025 outline says so directly. Project or product management experience and AI fundamentals are useful, not required.
How many questions is the PMI-CPMAI exam?
120 questions in 160 minutes, of which 20 are unscored pretest questions. The five domains are Trustworthy AI 15%, Business Needs 26%, Data Needs 26%, Model Development 16% and Operationalize 17%.
Is the exam the same as the six CPMAI phases?
No. The official prep course is organised around six methodology phases. The exam is five domains. You need both maps.
How much does PMI-CPMAI cost in Malaysia in total?
Face-to-face training is RM 4,800 early-bird or RM 5,200 standard, nett with no additional SST. Live virtual training is available upon enquiry. Self-paced is not offered for this programme. The PMI examination fee is USD 559 for members and USD 719 for non-members. An examination and PMI membership bundle is RM 3,500 and includes one year of PMI membership.
How do I keep the certification once I have it?
30 PDUs every three years, of which at least 18 must be education.
What happens if I fail?
You may sit up to three times within a one-year eligibility period. PMI suggests waiting 30 days before a retake. Each further attempt requires an exam fee.
Is the exam voucher included?
The exam voucher is an optional add-on. You still need PMI to approve your application before you can schedule.
