OVERVIEW

What the PgMP® is — and why the panel review, not the exam, is the real gate

The Program Management Professional is PMI's credential for people who run programmes rather than projects — several related component projects directed at one organisational objective. It is not a larger PMP. It asks a different question: can you evidence that you have led that kind of work, under very limited supervision, over years?

PgMP is the only PMI credential with two evaluations. The first is the panel review. A panel of volunteer PgMP-certified program managers, drawn from around the world and working without knowing who you are, reads the Program Management Experience Summaries you write on your application and decides whether your experience qualifies. Only when you pass it may you schedule the exam. That process takes approximately 60 days.

The exam that follows is 170 multiple-choice questions in 240 minutes, of which 150 are scored, across five domains: Strategic Program Alignment 15%, Program Life Cycle Management 44%, Business Alignment 11%, Stakeholder Engagement 16% and Governance 14%. Nearly half the paper sits in one domain. This programme teaches all five and works with you on the experience summaries, because that is where most PgMP applications are actually lost.

2

Evaluations to pass

The panel review first, then the examination.

5

Exam domains

Program Life Cycle Management alone carries 44%.

170

Questions, 240 minutes

150 are scorable; 20 are unscored pretest questions.

60

PDUs to renew

Every three years.

The panel review and the exam are both administered by PMI — the exam online proctored or at a Pearson VUE test centre. We prepare you for both and support your application; we do not assess or mark either.

Who it's for

Who should take PgMP certification training

This is not an entry-level credential. It is written for people who already lead programmes and can document years of it — PgMP will not accept anything less.

PgMP REQUIREMENTS

PgMP eligibility — three sets, and no training hours to collect

There are no training hours to collect for PgMP. What PMI asks for is documented experience in two parts — project management and program management — and all of it must have been accrued over the last 15 consecutive years.

Highest educationProject experienceProject management education
Secondary school diploma48 months of unique, non-overlapping project management experience — or an active PMP in place of it84 months of unique, non-overlapping program management experience
Bachelor's degree or higher48 months of unique, non-overlapping project management experience — or an active PMP in place of it48 months of unique, non-overlapping program management experience
GAC-accredited degree36 months of unique, non-overlapping project management experience — or an active PMP in place of it36 months of unique, non-overlapping program management experience

The months must be unique and non-overlapping. Where you ran several projects in the same month, only the time on one of them counts, and a project that was a component of a programme you are already claiming cannot be counted again as project management experience.

Eligibility is assessed by PMI, not by ProCert. Not sure which set you qualify under, or whether your months count? Send us your background on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly.

PgMP SYLLABUS

PgMP course syllabus — the five performance domains

Strategic Program Alignment

15% of the exam

Tying the programme to the organisation's strategy: why it exists, what it is meant to change, and how that case is made and kept current.

Program Life Cycle Management

44% of the exam

The work of running the programme from definition through delivery to closure, and the coordinated management of its component projects. Nearly half the exam.

Business Alignment

11% of the exam

Identifying, planning and sustaining the benefits a programme exists to produce, and handing them over so they last beyond it.

Stakeholder Engagement

16% of the exam

Identifying the people a programme affects and depends on, and managing expectations, influence and communication across all of them.

Governance

14% of the exam

The structures and decisions that keep a programme accountable: the governance board, the reviews, the escalation routes and the controls.

WHERE PgMP CANDIDATES GET CAUGHT

Most PgMP applications are not lost in the exam hall. They are lost in the experience summaries.

  1. 01

Preparing for the exam first, when the panel review is the gate that stands between you and it.

  2. 02

Writing experience summaries in the first person plural — what the team did — when the panel is assessing what you did.

  3. 03

Claiming months twice: a component project of a programme cannot also count as separate project management experience.

  4. 04

Spreading study evenly across five domains when Program Life Cycle Management is 44% of the paper.

  5. 05

Treating the second panel submission casually. There is no third — a second failure closes the application.

Questions

PgMP certification in Malaysia — common questions

What is the PgMP panel review?

It is the first of two evaluations. A panel of volunteer PgMP-certified program managers from around the world reads the Program Management Experience Summaries you write on your application and assesses your professional experience against them. Your identity is withheld from the reviewers. The process takes approximately 60 days, and you must pass it before you may sit the exam.

What happens if I fail the panel review?

You get one further attempt. PMI emails you the reviewers' reasons, you amend your experience summaries using that feedback, and you resubmit. If you do not pass on the second submission, the application is closed and your exam fee is refunded. There is no third attempt on that application.

Do I need a PMP before taking the PgMP?

No. Every eligibility set gives you a choice: either the required months of unique, non-overlapping project management experience, or an active PMP in their place. Holding a PMP simply means there is less to document — you still need the program management months on top.

PgMP or PMP — which should I take?

PMP is about managing a project. PgMP is about managing a programme: multiple related component projects directed at one organisational objective, run under very limited supervision. If your accountability is for a group of related projects and the benefits they together produce, PgMP is the credential that describes it.

What are the PgMP eligibility requirements?

Three sets, and all experience must have been accrued over the last 15 consecutive years. With a secondary school diploma: 48 months of project management experience, or an active PMP, plus 84 months of program management experience. With a bachelor's degree or higher: 48 months plus 48 months. With a bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a GAC-accredited programme: 36 months plus 36 months.

How is the experience actually counted?

In unique, non-overlapping months. Where you worked on several projects in one month, only the time on one of them counts toward the requirement, and a project that was a component of a programme you are claiming cannot be counted again as project management experience.

What do the experience summaries ask about?

Since March 2024 the prompts are built around Program Strategy, Program Governance and Program Leadership. The panel is checking that you personally, under very limited supervision, were responsible for the coordinated management of multiple related component projects directed toward a common organisational objective — so write in the first person about what you did, not what the team did.

How many questions is the PgMP exam?

170 multiple-choice questions in 240 minutes. Of those, 150 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest questions placed randomly throughout the paper. The domains are weighted: Strategic Program Alignment 15%, Program Life Cycle Management 44%, Business Alignment 11%, Stakeholder Engagement 16% and Governance 14%.

Can I sit the PgMP exam online from Malaysia?

Yes. PMI offers online proctored testing alongside Pearson VUE test centres. The PgMP exam is currently available in English and Simplified Chinese.

What happens if I fail the exam?

The exam eligibility period runs for one year, and you may attempt the exam up to three times within it. PMI charges a re-examination fee, shown in your PMI account.

How much does PgMP cost in Malaysia in total?

Face-to-face training is RM 7,900 early-bird or RM 8,300 standard, nett with no additional SST. Live virtual training is available upon enquiry. Self-paced is USD 299 / USD 349 / USD 399 for 90 / 180 / 365 days' access. The PMI examination fee is USD 640 for members and USD 800 for non-members. An examination and PMI membership bundle is RM 3,800 and includes one year of PMI membership.

Is the exam fee included in the training?

Ask before you book. What is bundled depends on the format and the intake, so an advisor will tell you exactly what is included in the fee you are quoted rather than leave you to assume.

How do I keep the certification once I have it?

60 PDUs every three years, recorded through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements system.

Can you run this in-house for our programme managers?

Yes. Private cohorts run at your premises or ours, with scheduling built around your team. Minimum 15 participants.
