OVERVIEW

What the PfMP® is — and why the panel review, not the exam, is the first hurdle

The Portfolio Management Professional is PMI's credential for the people who decide which programmes and projects an organisation should be running at all, and which it should stop. It sits above delivery. The work it certifies is aligning a portfolio of investments to strategy, governing it, and then evidencing that it performed.

PfMP is assessed in two stages, and this is the part most candidates underestimate. Evaluation 1 is a panel review: a panel of volunteer portfolio managers reads the Portfolio Management Experience Summaries on your application and judges whether your experience is genuinely portfolio management. Evaluation 2 is the exam. You cannot sit the exam until you have passed the panel review, so the written application is a gate and not paperwork.

It is also the most senior of these credentials by experience. Every route asks for 96 months — eight years — of professional business experience on top of the portfolio management months, and all of it must have been accrued within the last 15 consecutive years. There is no contact-hours requirement to satisfy, which is precisely why preparation here is about evidence and judgement rather than hours logged.

5

Exam domains

Strategic Alignment 25%, Governance 20%, Portfolio Performance 25%, Portfolio Risk Management 15%, Communications Management 15%.

170

Questions, 240 minutes

150 scored, plus 20 pretest questions that do not count. No scheduled breaks.

96

Months of business experience

Eight years, required on every eligibility route.

60

PDUs to renew

Every three years.

Both evaluations are administered by PMI — the panel review from your application, and the exam online proctored or at a Pearson VUE test centre. We prepare you for them and support your application; we do not sit on the panel and we do not mark the exam.

Who it's for

Who should take PfMP certification training

PfMP is written for people who already hold portfolio accountability. It is not an entry-level credential, and a project manager without portfolio decision-making will not meet the experience requirement.

PfMP REQUIREMENTS

PfMP eligibility — three sets, and 8 years of business experience in every one

Three sets, and every one of them asks for 96 months of professional business experience. What changes is your education and how many months of portfolio management experience you need on top.

Highest educationProject experience
Secondary diploma84 months (7 years) of unique, non-overlapping portfolio management experience, with a high school or secondary school diploma or global equivalent
Bachelor's degree48 months (4 years) of unique, non-overlapping portfolio management experience, with a bachelor's degree or higher, or global equivalent
GAC-accredited degree36 months (3 years) of unique, non-overlapping portfolio management experience, with a bachelor's degree or higher from a GAC-accredited programme

All experience must have been accrued within the last 15 consecutive years, and the portfolio management months must be unique and non-overlapping. There are no contact hours to earn — PfMP has no training-hours requirement. What the application asks for instead is written descriptions of your portfolio management experience against the five domains, with a maximum of 500 words per answer, which a panel of volunteer portfolio managers then assesses.

Eligibility is assessed by PMI, not by ProCert, and the panel review is decided by PMI's panel. Not sure whether your experience reads as portfolio management? Send us your background on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly.

WHERE PfMP CANDIDATES GET CAUGHT

Most people who stall on PfMP had the experience. Their application did not show it to the panel.

  1. 01

Treating the application as admin, when the panel review is a pass-or-fail evaluation you must clear before you may sit the exam.

  2. 02

Writing experience summaries that paraphrase the standard instead of describing what you personally decided, and why.

  3. 03

Running out of room. There is a maximum of 500 words per answer, so vague opening paragraphs cost you the evidence you needed to fit.

  4. 04

Describing programme or project delivery under a portfolio heading, when the panel is looking for decisions taken across components.

  5. 05

Preparing only for the exam, then finding the eight years of professional business experience were never documented anywhere.

Questions

PfMP certification in Malaysia — common questions

What is the PfMP panel review?

It is Evaluation 1, and it comes before the exam. A panel of volunteer portfolio managers assesses your professional experience from the Portfolio Management Experience Summaries on your application. If you do not pass it, you cannot sit the exam. The panel review process begins once any audit of your application is complete and your certification payment has been received.

How long are the PfMP experience summaries?

You write descriptions of your portfolio management experience against the five portfolio management domains, and you may use a maximum of 500 words per answer. That limit is tighter than it sounds once you start naming specific decisions, so it is worth drafting well before you open the application.

Do I need a PMP before I can take PfMP?

No. PMI's three PfMP eligibility sets ask for an education level, 96 months of professional business experience and a number of months of portfolio management experience. None of them requires another PMI certification.

Are there contact hours to complete for PfMP?

No. Unlike PMP, CAPM or PMI-ACP, PfMP has no formal training-hours requirement. It gates on the panel review of your documented experience instead. Training is still worth doing, but for the exam and the application rather than to tick a prerequisite.

How is the 96 months of professional business experience counted?

It is general professional business experience, and it is required on all three routes — 96 months, or eight years. It sits on top of the portfolio management months, and all experience must have been accrued within the last 15 consecutive years. The portfolio management months themselves must be unique and non-overlapping.

PfMP, PgMP or PMP — which one fits me?

PMP certifies managing a project. PgMP certifies managing a programme of related projects. PfMP certifies managing a portfolio: deciding which programmes and projects should exist, governing them, and reporting whether the portfolio delivered the strategy. If your accountability is choosing and balancing components rather than delivering them, PfMP is the right one.

How many questions is the PfMP exam?

170 multiple-choice questions in four hours. Of those, 150 are scored and 20 are pretest questions that do not count towards your result. There are no scheduled breaks, and if you take one the clock keeps running.

How are the exam questions distributed?

Across five domains: Strategic Alignment 25%, Governance 20%, Portfolio Performance 25%, Portfolio Risk Management 15% and Communications Management 15%. The two 25% domains together are half the paper.

How long does the PfMP process take?

PMI's handbook puts the panel review at approximately 60 days. Once you pass it you have a one-year eligibility period in which to sit the exam. If your application is selected for PMI's random audit, you are given 90 days to submit the supporting documents and the panel review begins after that.

Can I sit the PfMP exam in Malaysia?

Yes. The exam is administered by PMI, either online proctored or at a Pearson VUE test centre. It is administered in English only, and language aids are not currently available for it.

What happens if I fail the exam?

You may take the exam up to three times within your one-year eligibility period. PMI charges a re-examination fee for the second and third attempts, and the figure is shown in your PMI account. If you fail the panel review instead, a PMI certification associate contacts you to discuss your status.

How much does PfMP cost in Malaysia in total?

Face-to-face training is RM 7,900 early-bird or RM 8,300 standard, nett with no additional SST. Live virtual training is available upon enquiry. Self-paced is USD 299 / USD 349 / USD 399 for 90 / 180 / 365 days' access. The PMI examination fee is USD 640 for members and USD 800 for non-members. An examination and PMI membership bundle is RM 3,800 and includes one year of PMI membership.

Is the exam voucher included in the fee?

The exam voucher is an optional add-on. You still need PMI to approve your application before you can schedule.

How do I keep the certification once I have it?

60 PDUs every three years, reported through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements programme.

Can you run this in-house for our leadership team?

Yes. Private cohorts run at your premises or ours, with scheduling built around your team. Minimum 15 participants.
