OVERVIEW

What the PMI-CP™ is and why half the exam is contracts

The PMI Construction Professional is PMI's credential for people delivering construction and built-environment projects. It is not a rebadged PMP. Contracts Management alone is 50% of the exam; Stakeholder Engagement is 30%. Governance is 5%.

PMI does not set a single contact-hour figure. You complete four foundational course modules, in any order, and you document three years of on-the-job construction or built-environment experience from the last ten years. Each self-paced module is a 6–10 hour commitment on PMI's own page; ATPs may deliver the same modules instructor-led.

This programme delivers those four modules.

Who it's for

Who should take PMI-CP certification training

It is written for people already working on construction or built-environment projects, not for people entering the industry for the first time.

WHERE PMI-CP CANDIDATES GET CAUGHT

Most people who stall on PMI-CP skip a module or under-prepare contracts.

  1. 01

Preparing a PMP-style paper, then meeting a syllabus where contracts are half the marks.

  2. 02

Skipping a module because it felt familiar, then discovering PMI will not accept the application without all four.

  3. 03

Counting site experience older than ten years, which the application will not accept.

  4. 04

Spending revision time on governance, which is 5% of the exam.

Questions

PMI-CP certification in Malaysia — common questions

Is PMI-CP worth it in Malaysia?

If you deliver construction or built-environment projects, yes — it is the PMI credential written for that work. A PMP remains the general credential. PMI-CP is the specialist one, and half of it is contracts.

What are the prerequisites for PMI-CP?

Complete four foundational course modules, and document three years of on-the-job experience in construction or built-environment projects within the past ten years. There is no single contact-hour number.

What are the four modules?

Construction Project Communications; Construction Interface Management; Construction Scope and Change Order Management; and Construction Contract and Risk Management. They may be taken in any order. PMI lists each self-paced module as a 6–10 hour commitment.

How many questions is the PMI-CP exam?

120 questions in 230 minutes, offered in English. The domains are Contracts Management 50%, Stakeholder Engagement 30%, Strategy and Scope Management 15%, and Project Governance 5%.

Do I need a PMP first?

No. PMI-CP does not require another PMI credential. It requires the four modules and the construction experience.

How much does PMI-CP cost in Malaysia in total?

Face-to-face training is RM 6,000 early-bird or RM 6,500 standard, nett with no additional SST. Live virtual training is available upon enquiry. Self-paced is not offered for this programme. The PMI examination fee is USD 319 for members and USD 399 for non-members. An examination and PMI membership bundle is RM 2,700 and includes one year of PMI membership.

How do I keep the certification once I have it?

30 PDUs every three years, of which at least 18 must be education.

Can I sit the PMI-CP exam online from Malaysia?

Yes. PMI offers online proctored testing alongside Pearson VUE test centres. The exam is offered in English.

Is the exam voucher included?

The exam voucher is an optional add-on. You still need PMI to approve your application before you can schedule.

Can you run this in-house for our team?

Yes. Private cohorts run at your premises or ours, with scheduling built around your team. Minimum 15 participants.
