OVERVIEW
What ISO/IEC 42001 is
Organisations are deploying AI faster than they are governing it. Models are already sitting inside hiring decisions, credit assessment, customer service and operational workflows — and in most cases nobody can point to a documented owner, a risk register entry, or a clear answer to who is accountable when a system gets something wrong.
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the first international management system standard written specifically for artificial intelligence. It sets out how an organisation defines scope, assigns accountability, manages AI-specific risk, and demonstrates to regulators, clients and boards that AI is being run deliberately rather than informally.
Foundation is the entry point to the pathway. No prior background in AI, standards or auditing is assumed. Across two days it covers what the standard requires, how an AI Management System is structured, and how organisations move through certification and audit.

HOW IT FITS
How it fits with standards you may already run
| Standard | What it governs | Relationship to ISO/IEC 42001 |
|---|---|---|
| ISO/IEC 27001 | What it governsInformation security management | Relationship to ISO/IEC 42001Shares the same management system structure. Organisations certified to 27001 usually find 42001 familiar and can reuse much of the governance scaffolding. |
| ISO 9001 | What it governsQuality management | Relationship to ISO/IEC 42001Same high-level structure. Where 9001 governs process quality, 42001 governs the behaviour and oversight of AI systems specifically. |
| ISO/IEC 27701 | What it governsPrivacy information management | Relationship to ISO/IEC 42001Overlaps where AI systems process personal data. Privacy controls and AI governance controls are complementary rather than duplicative. |
| ISO/IEC 38507 | What it governsGovernance implications of AI for the board | Relationship to ISO/IEC 42001Sets governance expectations at board level. ISO/IEC 42001 is the operational management system that delivers against them. |

FAQ
FAQ
What is the GAICC ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation certification?
It is GAICC’s entry-level credential for ISO/IEC 42001:2023, the international standard for an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). It confirms that you understand the standard’s core ideas, how it is structured, and the ethical principles behind it — including AI governance, risk and responsible-AI practice. The credential is internationally recognised.
Who should apply for this certification?
Anyone who needs a formal first step into AI governance and ISO standards. That includes people supporting an AIMS inside their organisation; students, researchers and early-career practitioners in AI ethics, compliance or risk; and anyone planning to continue to GAICC Lead Implementer or Senior Lead Implementer.
What are the eligibility requirements?
There is no education or experience requirement. You do need at least 16 contact hours of structured ISO/IEC 42001 fundamentals training, completed with a GAICC-authorised provider or an equivalent recognised institution. GAICC self-paced courses also meet this. The self-paced course package on this page includes training that satisfies the hours requirement.
How many questions are in the exam and how long does it take?
The exam has 40 questions: 35 are scored and five are unscored pre-test items. You have 60 minutes to complete it. It is multiple-choice, sat online under proctoring.
What is the passing score?
You need a scaled score of at least 70% to pass.
How often can I take the exam?
If the first attempt is unsuccessful, one retake is included within a one-year eligibility period. Further attempts in that window can be purchased at a discounted fee.
What is the certification validity period?
The Foundation certification is valid for three years from the date it is issued.
How do I maintain or renew my certification?
In each three-year cycle you must complete at least 20 CPD hours, then submit a renewal application and the renewal fee.
What is the difference between the two packages?
The self-paced course package includes the full video course and everything needed to prepare from scratch, including 90 days of complimentary Govern365 access. The membership and exam package is for candidates who have already completed their ISO/IEC 42001 training and only need the examination, membership and supporting resources. Govern365 is not included in that package.
Does the self-paced package include Govern365?
Yes. The self-paced course package includes 90 days of complimentary Govern365 access. It is not part of the membership and exam package.
Can I buy the exam package if I have not done the training?
No. Sixteen contact hours of structured ISO/IEC 42001 training are required before you can sit the examination. If you have not completed it, choose the self-paced course package.
Do I need a technical or AI background?
No. Foundation assumes no prior experience of AI systems, standards or auditing.
How is this different from ISO/IEC 27001?
ISO/IEC 27001 governs information security. ISO/IEC 42001 governs artificial intelligence specifically, including bias, explainability and systems that change over time. The two are structured similarly and are often implemented together.
Can I enrol a team?
Yes. Group rates apply for five or more. Contact us for a corporate quote and consolidated invoicing.
Is the GAICC certification programme CPD accredited?
The GAICC certification programme is CPD accredited.
Certifying more than one person?
We handle group enrolment, consolidated billing and HRD Corp documentation.
