What changed from the earlier exam?
The most consequential change for preparation is not simply the longer clock. The domain balance now gives Business Environment a much larger place in the blueprint, and questions can connect project decisions with wider organisational objectives. AI and sustainability should be understood in project context rather than treated as isolated vocabulary lists, according to PMI's exam update and the current outline.
A candidate should therefore be able to explain why a technically feasible action might still be inappropriate: perhaps it fails a governance requirement, does not support the business case, creates an unmanaged risk or ignores a key stakeholder. That is a study implication of the outline, not a secret PMI answer formula.
What do the three domains mean for study?
People concerns working with and leading people: collaboration, conflict, communication, team capability and stakeholder relationships. Process concerns organising and adapting the work so a project delivers effectively. Business Environment connects the project to organisational value, governance and the external context. Use the detailed tasks and enablers in the official outline to turn these headings into a study checklist.
Do not allocate study time only in exact proportion to the percentages. A learner with a strong technical background but weak stakeholder judgement may need extra People practice. Someone who knows Agile vocabulary but struggles with benefits and organisational change may need a different allocation. Use the blueprint to prevent omissions and diagnostic practice to decide emphasis.
Predictive, agile and hybrid are all relevant
The approximately 40/60 approach balance is not an invitation to ignore predictive work. Nor does experience in a Scrum team establish readiness for every hybrid or predictive scenario. The question is how to choose and adapt an approach to the project's circumstances, as described in the Examination Content Outline.
For example, imagine a project with regulated physical delivery and a software component whose requirements are evolving. A useful study exercise is to explain which decisions need formal control, which can be iterated, how the teams coordinate and how value is accepted. This is an original practice scenario, not a recalled PMP question.
Question formats and the case-study section
The current outline describes case studies and scenario-based questions, including graphical material and different response interactions. Some interaction formats depend on delivery mode. Do not prepare by assuming every item is a short four-option question, or that a provider can know which items you will receive.
Practise reading the objective, identifying the actual decision being requested and separating useful facts from distracting detail. For multi-response items, follow the question's selection instruction. For a case, keep track of what has changed before applying a solution that worked earlier in the scenario.
Breaks and pacing: do not copy the old section plan
The 2026 outline places the first break after the case-study section and the second approximately halfway through the independent questions. Once you complete the relevant review and start the break, you cannot return to the previous section. An old plan based on exactly three blocks of 60 questions should not be assumed to describe the current exam.
For rough planning, 240 minutes divided by 180 questions is 80 seconds per question. That is an arithmetic average, not a PMI time limit for each question: case reading and question complexity vary. Test a pacing strategy in practice and use the interface's actual review and submission prompts on exam day.

The ECO and the PMBOK Guide do different jobs
The Examination Content Outline defines the assessed domains and tasks. The PMBOK Guide and other references help develop understanding; they are not a substitute for the outline. Do not choose study materials only because a provider names the newest book edition. Ask whether the actual questions, lessons and simulations map to the exam you will take.
Likewise, a document mentioning AI or sustainability is not automatically aligned. Ask for the link between its learning objectives and current exam tasks, and whether its mock examinations use the current time and section experience.

Exam change versus training-hours change
These are 2 separate changes.
The updated PMP examination has been in effect since 9 July 2026. The eligibility rules for live instructor-led PMP training change separately from 1 December 2026.
From 1 December 2026, live PMP training, whether delivered in person or virtually, will count towards the 35-hour training requirement only when it is delivered through an eligible provider route specified by PMI, including a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP), China Registered Education Provider (REP), or eligible accredited higher education programme, including PMI GAC programmes. Training completed before 1 December 2026 remains eligible under the requirements in effect before that date.
The exam launch date and the live-training eligibility date are therefore not the same. Candidates should check the requirements that apply to the date on which their training is completed.

Frequently asked questions
Is the PMP exam still 230 minutes?
No. PMI's current 2026 specification is 240 minutes for the updated examination.
Are all 180 questions scored?
No. The current outline identifies 170 scored and 10 unscored pretest questions. Treat every item seriously; you should not try to identify which ones are unscored.
Does the exam have a fixed public passing percentage?
PMI does not publish a universal current PMP pass percentage in the official materials reviewed for this guide. Read the passing-score explanation before comparing mock results with claims such as 61% or 70%.
How should I change my preparation?
