Understand a PMP application audit, the documents PMI may request, the 90-day deadline and how to organise evidence without inventing experience.

A PMP application audit is PMI's check of the evidence supporting an application. It is not automatically an accusation of misconduct. If selected, follow PMI's notice and submit the requested education, experience and training documentation. The current handbook allows 90 days and estimates approximately 5-7 business days for review after receiving a complete submission. Final decisions and any exceptions belong to PMI. [1]

What can PMI ask you to prove?

PMI's current handbook identifies education records, experience verification by supervisors or managers, and evidence of eligible professional education. Its instructions, rather than a training company's checklist, determine the material required for your application. [1]

Application area

Evidence to organise

Education

Qualification certificate or diploma, plus recognition information where relevant

Project experience

Verification of the projects and responsibilities you reported

Training

Certificates or provider letters documenting eligible completed education

Special circumstances

Do not automatically send confidential project files, customer contracts or personal information unrelated to the request. Read the notice carefully and seek clarification about alternative evidence when necessary.

The audit process, step by step

Read and save the notification. Record the actual deadline and requested evidence. Do not substitute the date of your preferred examination for PMI's deadline.

Compare the request with your submitted application. The records need to support what you actually wrote, including dates and responsibilities. If you discover an error, ask PMI how it should be corrected rather than changing supporting evidence to conceal it.

Contact the requested verifiers. Explain that PMI is checking professional experience and provide the relevant application details for review. A verifier should confirm what they know to be true, not approve a more impressive version of your role.

Submit through the current instructed route. Do not follow an old guide that assumes every audit uses postal envelopes or a particular signature format. The notification and current PMI process control the method.

Monitor completion and responses. A document collected is not necessarily a document accepted. Keep a record of outstanding requests and messages until PMI confirms the outcome. [1]

Who should verify project experience?

Use the supervisor or manager evidence requested by PMI. A colleague is not automatically an acceptable replacement because they are easier to contact. When a manager has left, an employer has closed, or a contractual relationship is unusual, contact PMI and describe the facts before assuming an alternative verifier will be accepted. [1]

For preparation, identify who actually observed your work and whether their contact details are current. Do not list someone merely because they will sign without checking. A legitimate verifier may ask you to correct a responsibility description; that is a useful accuracy check.

For each row, record the request date, due date, response received and remaining action. Store the records securely. This makes an audit manageable without pretending the checklist can approve it.

Timing and examination eligibility

The published 90-day documentation window is not a recommended waiting period. Start as soon as you receive the request because locating old education records or a former manager can take time. The 5-7 business-day estimate begins with a complete submission and is not a guarantee that every case will finish within a calendar week. [1]

The handbook says your one-year eligibility period starts after successful completion of the audit. Wait for the actual PMI outcome before promising an examination date to an employer or purchasing non-refundable travel. Application processing, audit clearance and appointment availability are separate steps. [1]

What happens if the audit is unsuccessful?

PMI's current handbook states that an applicant who does not meet the audit requirements, or does not comply, is subject to a one-year suspension before reapplying. An audit therefore deserves the same care as the original application. It is not something to abandon on the assumption that a fresh application can immediately replace it. [1]

If records are unavailable or the request is unclear, contact PMI while there is still time to resolve the issue. ProCert cannot waive the audit, select the outcome or guarantee acceptance of substitute evidence.

Avoid the errors you can control

A preparation provider should not invent application language, supply a false verifier or backdate training. Your own checks should focus on consistent dates, honest responsibilities, completed education and evidence that can be explained without embellishment. PMI's examination and certification integrity rules apply independently of anything a provider promises. [1]

For a project that overlapped with another, retain the distinct project descriptions but do not add the shared months twice. For a technical role, explain your actual leadership responsibilities rather than relying on the job title. The experience guide and eligibility guide address those issues before submission.

What support is appropriate?

Appropriate support can include explaining PMI's published requirements, checking that a record is clear, helping you create an evidence tracker and identifying questions to ask PMI. Inappropriate support includes guaranteeing audit approval or reshaping facts to fit a pathway.

For an employer-sponsored cohort, the employer can help employees locate training records and legitimate supervisors. Each application remains individual; a company's sponsorship does not make all participants eligible or ensure audit success.

Frequently asked questions

Does audit selection mean PMI thinks I lied?

Not by itself. Selection is a verification step. Respond accurately and follow the request rather than inferring an accusation from the notification. [1]

Can I choose any colleague as a verifier?

Do not assume that. Use PMI's requested supervisor/manager verification, and ask PMI about exceptional circumstances. [1]

Can PMI audit me after certification?

PMI reserves audit rights beyond the initial application. Keep accurate records and maintain truthful certification information rather than treating approval as the end of all verification obligations. [1]

What should I do before applying?

Use the application readiness checklist, prepare accurate project descriptions, and retain education and training evidence. If you are already in an audit, PMI's notification is the controlling instruction.
